Day 7: Driving on I-70, Torrential Downpours, Weather Channel Updates, and the Midwest Survival Tour Portion of the Trip

I left the Columbus, Ohio area this morning, and by the time I got to Illinois, the skies absolutely opened up. It rained, mostly very hard rain, for the next four hours. It was awful. Then there were tornado warnings and alerts for softball sized hail in Kansas City, Kansas tonight. Apparently flooding is also on the schedule from tonight into tomorrow morning.

At one point during the storm, I saw a gigantic cross on the side of the highway. Honestly, I took that as a sign that God was watching over me and was going to get me safely to Kansas. Either that, or it was a warning that I should probably slow down a little. 😂
I made the executive decision to get a hotel with covered parking. Hopefully my car survives the night and does not end up halfway to Oz. 😎

Then, about 30 minutes before getting to Kansas, the skies suddenly cleared up and everything looked beautiful. After hours of driving through what felt like the end of times, it was actually pretty peaceful. The sunset was out, the roads were dry, and for the first time all day I wasn’t gripping the steering wheel like I was trying to keep the car attached to the earth.

Nothing too exciting today, just driving to Kansas, grabbing dinner, and preparing for tomorrow’s drive to Denver, where it’s supposed to be rainy and cold. I’m not exactly sure what I did to anger the weather gods, but they seem very committed to making this road trip feel like a deleted scene from Twister. 😎

On the bright side, I did bring a good rain jacket, which currently appears to be the MVP of the trip. 😂

I saw seven dead deer today. 😢

Tomorrow will be another glamorous day of driving somewhere new, just to sleep and repeat the process all over again.
